Design and Simulation for Natural Ventilation

INTRODUCTION
Good passive and ventilation design strategies could reduce the dependence of active cooling yet maintaining a good thermal environment. This course promotes the design for thermal comfort with ventilation strategies. Participants are also introduced to the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation software to model airflow in a space and urban environment, so as to analyse the effectiveness of various design options.

LECTURERS
DR POH HEE JOO is the Research Scientist and Capability Group Manager of the Fluid Dynamic Department at the Institute of High Performance Computing, A-STAR. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department of National University of Singapore and external assessor for the Green Mark projects. Dr Poh has over 15 years of working experience in CFD research and consultancy jobs, and has been involved in more than 70 CFD projects in Singapore, mainly focusing on system design and building simulation works.

DR GEORGE XU is the Associate of Parsons Brinckerhoff. He has 20 years of experience in CFD modelling for thermal comfort, mechanical and natural ventilation, fire and smoke modelling, chemical dispersions and infection controls in various types of buildings including concert hall, MRT stations, museum, data centres, schools, hawker centres, hospitals, and various types of residential and commercial buildings.

MR OWEN WEE is the Vice President (Architecture) of Surbana International Consultants Pte Ltd. He has been working in the architecture field since graduating and has been involved in a wide range of projects. He was involved in a number of large scale projects in China. With his vast experience and knowledge in architecture and master planning, he won the SIA GOLD design award 2006, BCA Buildability Award 2007 and BCA Barrier Free and Accessibility 2008 for his involvement and works.

Building professionals, project managers, developers, building owners, facility managers and other stakeholders involved in green building projects

ASSESSMENT AND AWARD
This course is assessment-based. A Certificate of Successful Completion (CSC) will be issued to participants who :
i. Achieve at least 75% class attendance; and
ii. Pass all the assessment(s)
