Empowering Curiosity: Sam Teo's Journey to Engineering Excellence with BCA Academy

In the bustling world of Facilities Management (FM), where precision and expertise are paramount, one individual stands out as a beacon of success, armed with knowledge and determination. Meet Sam Teo, an alumnus of BCA Academy. Armed with knowledge and determination, Sam's journey from the Navy to a thriving career in FM is an inspiring tale of resilience and ambition.

Before embarking on his educational journey at BCA Academy, Sam served in the Navy for five years. His aspirations extended beyond his military service, leading him to pursue higher education. This shift was motivated by a desire to delve into new areas, like facilities management, and contribute to different fields after his dedicated military service. The catalyst for his decision was a visit to BCA Academy's open house during his time at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE). The impression he gleaned from that visit played a pivotal role in shaping his future.

Sam's quest for knowledge led him to BCA Academy, where he pursued a Diploma in Facilities Management (FM) from 2017 to 2020. His educational journey at BCA Academy was a rich tapestry of experiences and often transcended the boundaries of FM. Recalling the module on Information Technology/Information and Communication Technology (IT/ICT), he reminisced about how it not only broadened his thinking and refined his skills but also paved the way for a project that centred around applying IT in military contexts, tapping into his military background. In another module focused on mechanical engineering, Sam vividly remembered being captivated by his lecturer's expertise in the subject. Sam's appreciation for his lecturers extended beyond their academic prowess. He particularly cherished the fun outings the lecturers organised, which provided practical knowledge and real-world insights.

After completing his studies at BCA Academy, Sam's career trajectory took him to Japan, where he joined a well-recognised FM company and worked on major projects to provide his technical expertise, particularly in enhancing facility safety for nuclear plants and improving 3D printing processes.

Sam currently holds a position of a site engineer for a prominent company specialising in clean room solutions. In his role, Sam is responsible for overseeing the assembly and installation of clean room equipment. In the present day, he regularly journeys to Japan in his role as a project coordinator, collaborating on project matters with counterparts in the country. Fuelled by a deep passion for Japanese culture, he finds fulfilment in a life immersed in enriching cultural experiences alongside a flourishing career.

This year, he achieved a significant milestone by earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Project Management from the University of the West of England, Bristol. This accomplishment underscores his dedication to lifelong learning and his unwavering pursuit of knowledge.

Reflecting on his journey, Sam, offering valuable advice to current students, says, "Your time at BCA Academy is a valuable opportunity to build a strong foundation in the built environment industry. Don't just focus on grades but immerse yourself in the learning process. Take on challenges, explore different aspects of the field, and don't be afraid to make mistakes—they are often the best teachers." He also encourages students to embrace campus life fully, immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere, and forge meaningful connections with fellow students and faculty members.

Sam's success story stands as a testament to the transformative power of education. From his beginnings in the Navy to becoming a site engineer, his journey exemplifies how BCA Academy equips students with not just knowledge but also the confidence to excel in their chosen fields. Sam's story serves as an inspiration to all aspiring students looking to harness the power of education to achieve their dreams.

We are proud of you Sam!
