About the Course

Overview

The Specialist Diploma in Sustainability and Carbon Management is a comprehensive program designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to address the pressing challenges of sustainable development in the built environment due to climate change. This specialized diploma integrates a deep understanding of sustainability principles focusing on achieving super low energy buildings while managing their carbon footprint and emissions.


This module addresses the holistic carbon management approach within the built environment sector. It covers the lifecycle of carbon emissions, and explores carbon mitigation and reduction strategies towards achieving carbon neutrality.

The module also delves into life cycle assessment (LCA) techniques and their application in computing and managing carbon emissions.

Objectives

To successfully complete this course, you will be expected to be able to:

a)  Appreciate the sources of carbon and the effects of carbon within the built environment,
b)  Compute the carbon footprint of a built environment project; and

c)  Apply various carbon mitigation and management measures to achieve zero carbon for a built environment project

1.  Introduction to Carbon Management for the BE Sector

a)  Overview of greenhouse gases and their impact on the environment
b)  What is carbon? How does it contribute to climate change?
c)  Overview of carbon management in addressing climate change
d)  Embodied and Operational Carbon

2.  Whole Life Carbon for the Built Environment

a)  Overview of carbon in the BE
b)  What is carbon footprint?
c)  Whole life carbon and its significance
d)  Definition of Scopes 1-3 emission
e)  Sources of embodied carbon (A1 to D)

3.  Carbon Mitigation Strategies

a)  Operational Carbon
b)  Embodied Carbon
c)  Carbon Calculation (SG Bldg Carbon Calculator)
d)  Offsetting Carbon

4.  Life Cycle Analysis and Carbon Computation

a)  GM:2021 Requirements on Whole life Carbon Section
b)  Introduction to Decarbonisation: Framework and Approaches
c)  Hands-on Practice: Case Study on LCA Computation of a Building


Course Information
Commencement Date: May 2025
3 months
BCA Braddell Campus
2 to 3 evenings per week (some courses may be held on Saturdays)
Classroom + Asynchronous

Registration closes 2 weeks prior to modular certificate commencement or when the class is fully subscribed, whichever comes first. Registration can remain open until course commencement date if training spaces are still available.

The proposed programme is designed for BE professionals who support or assist in the design of green buildings towards meeting net zero target, in disciplines such as

Assessment & Award
Upon completion, participants shall be awarded the Modular Certificate on Carbon Management for the Built Environment.

Participants who complete both the Modular Certificate on Sustainable Building Design Strategies and the Modular Certificate on Carbon Management for the Built Environment shall be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Sustainability & Carbon Management for the Built Environment.
Fee & Funding

Fee (inclusive of 9% GST)

Certificate in Sustainable Building Design Strategies (Modular Certificate B - 79036B) S$3,600 Full course fee without subsidy

  • Fee payable after 50% funding support
  • For Singaporeans and Singapore PRs, including those sponsored by non-SME companies
To be confirmed
  • Fee payable after 70% funding support
  • Singaporeans 40 years old and above 
    OR
  • SME company sponsored Singaporeans or Singapore PRs

Participant must achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all assessments. BCA Academy reserves the right to recover the funded amount from the participant (self-sponsored) or employer (company sponsored) if participant did not meet the eligibility criteria.
