About the Course

Overview

In consideration of the climatic context, shaping building passive design in its orientation, façades as well as interior layout can reduce the building’s heat load and operating costs. Looking at performance perspectives, buildings are encouraged to be highly permeable in areas of natural ventilation but at the same time, able to complement with minimal wind driven rain effects. To evaluate the effectiveness of building designs, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling tool is able to provide detailed airflow analysis which allows designers to bring in sustainable and practical design concepts to the forefront.

Objectives

This course aims to equip industry practitioners with knowledge to conduct CFD modelling simulations as well as identify strategies to enhance the natural ventilation of buildings.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply BCA Green Mark 2021 (GM: 2021) requirements and prevailing Singapore Standards for outdoor and indoor thermal environment.
  • Perform modelling setup and simulation (including geometry creation, CFD meshing etc.).
  • Analyse results and determine strategies to improve the overall natural ventilation performance.

Trainer / Lecturer

Dr. Poh Hee Joo is an Associate Professor in the Department of The Built Environment at the National University of Singapore (NUS). With over 25 years of experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) research and consultancy, Dr. Poh has led more than 70 projects focused on building physics, urban microclimate, environmental health, and sustainability. He was previously the Principal Scientist and Domain Specialist at the Institute of High-Performance Computing, A*STAR, and an Adjunct Associate Professor at NUS. His leadership extends to roles as an invited reviewer for prestigious journals and as a speaker at global conferences on urban environmental modelling and sustainable cities. Recognised for his contributions, he was named a World Cities Summit Young Leader in 2014, won the President's Science and Technology Award in 2019, and was listed among Asia's top 100 outstanding researchers in 2020. Dr. Poh also serves as President of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (Singapore Chapter) and is on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Building Physics.
